Athletics dominate Day 7 of IPG as EALA posts mixed results

East African Legislative Assembly, Kampala, Uganda: December 15th 2019: Day 7 of the Inter-Parliamentary Games was awash with Athletics taking centre stage. EALA was not so lucky on the occasion, posting mixed results and missing out on the coveted positions.

In track and field games, Parliament of Kenya’s team (consisting of Hon Dan Wanyama, Hon Patrick Mariru, Hon Joshua Kandie and Hon John Paul Mwingi) took the first position in the 4x 400 metres relay, finishing on 04.05 minutes while Parliament of Uganda came in 8 seconds later, at 04.13.1.  Parliament of Burundi was a distant third at 04.38.1. In the staff category, Parliament of Uganda (consisting of Denis Jackson, Malwa Emmanuel, Kalanda Aaron and Kitenya Francis) crossed the finish line first at 3.45.3 while Parliament of Kenya came second at 3.48 minutes.  In the 800 metres final, Hon Julius Acon (02.23.6) of Parliament of Uganda won, followed closely, by Parliament of Kenya’s, Hon Patrick Mariru (02.26.8), a split second ahead of compatriot, Hon Julius Kandie who garnered 02.28.7.  In the women Parliamentarians’ 4x400 relay race, Parliament of Tanzania was first at 06.03.1 while Parliament of Uganda came a close second, hitting the tape at 06.31.0. Parliament of Kenya finished a distant third at 10.42.4.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Tanzania, Hon Dr Tulia Ackson scooped gold for her Parliament comfortably winning the 1600 m walking race for women.  Parliament of Kenya’s Hon Edith Nyenze, led the race for the better part, but faltered before falling back to finish second on 12.14.9. Parliament of Uganda’s Hon Zaituni Driwaru finished third, scooping 12.43.2.   EALA’s Hon Noor Mohammed, Hon Josephine Lemoyan, Hon Mnyaa Mohammed and Hon Happiness Lugiko participated in the races where all Parliamentary teams fielded two athletes respectively, while Jovitus Nkeramigambi, Hilda Makoka and Bobi Odiko did duty for the staff category.

As at time of press, Tug of war matches were still on-going. Darts is also expected to feature later in the evening.
