EALA has today met with Parliamentarians from the Kenya National Assembly and the Senate to push for the integration agenda. In the meeting, EALA Members called on their counterparts to use every available opportunity to popularize the integration process in Kenya. With devolution now in place in Kenya, legislators are optimistic that the counties and locations can fully embrace the integration message.
Members were emphatic that integration was non-reversible but maintained that sensitization was key to maintain its tempo. The Speaker of EALA, Rt. Hon Margaret Nantongo Zziwa remarked that East Africans were looking forward to more achievements in the integration dispensation. She remarked that the Assembly was keen to reach out to the populace.
“As legislators, we have to continuously play our part as engines of mobilization. We shall continue to re-double our efforts by reaching out to various groups including university students, the Faith Based Community, women groups and the Diaspora”, the Speaker remarked.
The Chairperson of the Regional Integration Committee at the Kenya National Assembly, Hon Florence Kajuju, urged the Partner States to take integration a notch higher by ensuring the full implementation of the Common Market Protocol.
She cited the cross border legal practice which is necessary to enable the legal fraternity to practice as a priority.
“I acknowledge that EALA is considering the EAC Cross border legal Practice Bill, 2014 and many are waiting to take advantage of the space”, Hon Kajuju stated.
The Chairperson told the EALA Members to re-double their efforts in civic awareness as the integration process becomes stronger. “As we move towards political federation, we must create awareness”, she remarked.
