Kisumu, 20th February 2024 - The Committee on Agriculture, Tourism and Natural Resources led by the chairperson Honourable Francoise Uwumukiza commences an on-spot assessment to evaluate the implementation of projects and plans by the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) based in Kisumu and Jinja respectively. This assessment will also examine the contributions of these institutions to food security and climate change resilience in the East African Community (EAC).
The LVBC, based in Kisumu, Kenya, was established in accordance with Article 114 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC to coordinate policies, laws, and regulations concerning the Lake Victoria Basin, promoting stakeholder participation in sustainable development, and providing guidance on sectoral projects and programs.
The LVFO, located in Jinja, Uganda, was established under the Convention for the Establishment of Lake Victoria Fisheries Organizations, aimed at promoting the management and utilization of fisheries resources, enhancing capacity building and research, providing a forum for discussion on environmental impacts, and serving as a clearing-house for fisheries and aquaculture information.
During interactive meetings last held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, both institutions informed the Committee about their ongoing projects. The LVBC highlighted projects such as the construction of its headquarters in Kisumu, as well as initiatives focused on maritime safety, climate change adaptation, and research in resilience. The LVFO discussed projects related to responsible fisheries, aquaculture promotion, and sustainable fisheries contribution to the blue economy.
To assess the implementation of these projects, the Committee will conduct interactive meetings with the management of LVBC and LVFO. Additionally, site visits will be made to the construction site of the LVBC headquarters in Kisumu and various project sites in Kisumu and Jinja.
