EALA Condoles With the United Republic of Tanzania Following the Blasts at the TPDF Arms Depot

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) hereby expresses its regrets and heartfelt condolences to His Excellency President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and its citizens, following the explosions that occurred on Wednesday night (February 16, 2011), at the Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Forces (TPDF) Military depot in Gongo la Mboto area, Dar es Salaam.

It is with deep regret that EALA has learned of the explosions that led to death of over 20 persons, injured hundreds, while displacing thousands of people who were forced to seek safe refuge elsewhere.  Citizens of the United Republic of Tanzania and the region at large woke up to this sad news. EALA condoles with the families and relatives of those who lost their loved ones and prays that they find comfort during this period of grief.  We also wish all citizens who were injured and or/maimed during the unfortunate blasts speedy recovery.

EALA notes with appreciation the steps taken so far by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in providing shelter to the thousands of people affected, as it makes plans to accommodate all victims of the blasts.  We take cognizance of the fact that the extent of the damage and destruction to property may be enormous, leading to ramifications: including loss of livelihood in the immediate to mid-term period.

We thus wish to appeal to the citizens of the country to be calm during this period as the authorities and all stakeholders put together efforts to contain and remedy the situation.

Hon. Abdirahin H. Abdi
SPEAKER, EALA.
