East African Legislative Assembly, Rwakitura, Uganda: May 18, 2017: H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni early this week received the Speaker of EALA, Rt Hon Daniel F. Kidega at his home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura District, Uganda.
The Head of State held cordial discussions with the EALA Speaker who took the opportunity to brief His Excellency on the activities and progress of EALA as the tenure of the 3rd Assembly comes to an end on June 4th, 2017.
The Speaker said a strong Parliament was necessary for oversight of the region’s projects and programmes and said EALA had consistently played a key role in the same. The Speaker briefed President Museveni on the scorecard of EALA including Bills passed, Resolutions and Motions moved and called for implementation of the enacted laws by the Partner States. In this regard, Speaker Kidega implored the Summit of EAC Heads of State to give direction on the integration process.
President Museveni and the EALA Speaker both affirmed the need for warm and cordial bilateral relations between Partner States saying anything to the contrary would inevitably slow down the integration process.
The Speaker remarked that Republic of South Sudan needs to be fully integrated at the earliest opportunity to enable the country to reap on the benefits of integration.
President Museveni was categorical that EAC was committed to realization of the Political Federation, the ultimate pillar of integration. He hailed EALA for remaining on course with regards to its mandate and thanked the Speaker for steering the Assembly.
