East African Legislative Assembly, Arusha, Tanzania: December 5, 2022: The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) holds its sitting in Arusha, Tanzania, this week. The Second Meeting of the Fifth Session of the Fourth Assembly takes place from Monday, December 5th, 2022 to Thursday, December 15th, 2022.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Martin K. Ngoga, shall preside over the Sitting. Significantly, this is the last Sitting for the 4th Assembly, whose life and tenure ends on December 17th, 2022.
A number of issues are to be deliberated on at this Sitting. The key highlights include the reading of the EAC Financial Services Commission Bill, 2022, The EAC Whistleblowers Bill, 2018, Report of the Committee on General Purpose on the General Purpose Committee on the EAC Annual Report FY 2017/18 and 18/19, and the Report of the Committee on Accounts on the Audited Accounts of the EAC.
This Sitting shall also debate on the EAC Livestock Bill 2021. The Bill moved by Hon Dr Woda Jeremiah, aims at providing coordinated identification, characterization, mapping & enumeration of livestock. It also seeks to strengthen the detection, prevention & control of transboundary animal diseases.
The EAC Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Bill, on its part anticipates provision of legal framework for matters relating to sexual and reproductive health, to protect children, adolescents and young children from sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation.
The Session marks the end of the 4th Assembly with a new Assembly expected to be sworn in on December 19th, 2022.
EALA is the regional Legislative Assembly of the East African Community. Under Chapter 9 of the Treaty, EALA is mandated with core functions of Legislation, approval of the EAC budget, Representation and Oversight.
