Red hot EALA beat the Burundi National Assembly 4-2 in an entertaining football match played at the Sheikh Abeid Amri Memorial Stadium this afternoon. EALA who lost 0-2 to defending champions, Parliament of Uganda yesterday, were a vastly improved side running round the Burundi goal in the first half.
Striker John Kibwana opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a rasping shot that beat Burundi’s keeper Ibrahim Uwizeye. The same player notched in two quick goals in the 14th and the 21st minute before Burundi could settle.
The Burundi technical bench made a substitution bringing in Hon Simon Kashinje for a tired Hon Desire Wezimana and this paid off instantly. It was Burundi’s turn to turn on the gas on a tired EALA in the second half. Simon Kashinje netted a brace in quick succession. The second goal for Burundi was a sweet one with the player lobbing the ball over an advancing EALA goalkeeper, Joseph Kibwana.
EALA Striker Wyclif Keto scored to make it 4-2 only to miss a penalty shortly thereafter following an infringement in the penalty box by Hon Evariste Ndikumana.
In an earlier match of the day, Parliament of Kenya and the Parliament of Tanzania drew 1-1 in an entertaining but tense match. Kenya drew the first blood through a well executed kick by Stephen Njatta. Njatta tormented the Parliament of Tanzania’s defence several times but the goal keeper Hon Iddi Azzan made a number of saves.
Kenya’s goalkeeper, Hon Kanini Kega made a daring save from a Hon Joshua Nassari’s blockbuster in the 20th minute of the first half. The Parliament of Tanzania was awarded a penalty after the Kenyan keeper was judged to have felled Hon Joshua Nassari. Stephen Nkonoki made no mistake from the spot-kick to get an equaliser. The referee sent out Hon Dan Wanyama for a bookable offence leading to a contestation at half-time.
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated clash between Parliament of Uganda and Parliament of Tanzania was not played after the former protested the inclusion of one Imelda Hango in the line-up. According to a protest note seen by the Public Relations division, the player in question who is a staff member of the Parliament of Tanzania played in the 1st division netball league as a goal attacker of Police Dodoma. The letter signed by Hon Kiiza Winnie also states that she played in the 2013 FIBA Africa Basketball championship.
The rules governing the Inter-parliamentary Netball games bar any staff member who plays the game at an active/professional level from participation. Such privilege is at the moment the preserve of Parliamentarians only. The Disciplinary Committee is expected to meet tomorrow to adjudicate on the matter.
In tomorrow’s games, EALA takes on Kenya in the morning at 10 am before Parliament of Uganda takes the field to get walk-over points over Rwanda. In football, Uganda shall face off with Burundi. Tanzania on its part is expected to benefit from Rwanda’s absence in the next match at 4pm.
