EALA’s 14th Edition of the Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPG) successfully ends in Mombasa, as Uganda dominates overall

Mombasa, Kenya – December 19, 2024 –The East African Legislative Assembly’s (EALA) 14th Edition of the Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPG) successfully ends in the vibrant coastal town of Mombasa, after 12 days of fierce and exhilarating competition under the scorching heat of Mombasa, the teams displayed unmatched sportsmanship across a myriad of sports, including football, netball, golf, tug of war, darts, volleyball, walk races, basketball, and athletics. The atmosphere was electric, filled with moments of triumph, camaraderie, and unforgettable performances. As the games conclude, the spirit of unity and friendly rivalry among the participants will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, marking this year's Inter-Parliamentary Games as a spectacular celebration of athletic prowess and regional solidarity. 

The closing dinner, organized by Rt. Hon. Dr. Moses Wetangula, Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya, and Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi, Speaker of the Kenyan Senate, was held at Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort and Spa. Awards were given to winning teams and individuals. Rt. Hon. Wetangula emphasized the importance of unity and free movement within the East African Community (EAC), while Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, Speaker of EALA, thanked President Ruto for his support and extended best wishes to injured Tanzanian parliamentarians.

Hon. Kanini Kega, chair of the Joint Planning Committee, and Hon. Vincent Kawaya, co-chair of the Bunge Sports Club, praised the organization and thanked sponsors. The games were held at various facilities across Mombasa, including Kenya Ports Authority, Mbaraki Stadium, The Agha Khan Academy, Nyali Golf Club, and Shanzu Stadium.

The IPG, held under the theme “EAC@25, Enhancing Integration through Parliamentary Games,” showcased the talents and sportsmanship of EAC legislators. Organized annually by EALA and the host partner state, the event enhances interaction among EALA members, partner state parliaments, and EAC citizens. This year’s event was co-sponsored by Kenya Ports Authority, County Government of Mombasa, The Agha Khan Academy, Kenya Commercial Bank, Cooperative Bank of Kenya, Mchezo Ltd, and East African Breweries Ltd.

Key Outcomes and Highlights of the 14th Inter-Parliamentary Games

Track Events

In the 100m Race, Hon. Acom Joan Alobo from Uganda clinched first place in the women's category, followed by Hon. Omanyo Catherine of Kenya and Hon. Sichalwe Condesta of Tanzania. In the men's category, Hon. Odoi Bernard Onen from Uganda secured the top spot, with Hon. Eng. Vincent Musyoka of Kenya and Hon. Ochan Patrick of Uganda taking second and third places, respectively.

The 200m Race saw Hon. Acom Joan Alobo of Uganda once again taking first place in the women's category, with Hon. Taka Agnes of Uganda and Hon. Sichalwe Condesta of Kenya following. In the men's category, Hon. Odoi Bernard from Uganda emerged victorious, followed by Hon. Ochan Patrick of Uganda and Hon. Nyutu Joe of Kenya.

In the 400m Race, Hon. Anatropia Theonest from Tanzania won the women's category, with Hon. Osoru Mourine and Hon. Abeja Susan Jolly, both from Uganda, taking second and third places. The men's category was dominated by Ssekitoleeko Robert from Uganda, with Hon. Wokorach Simon Peter of Uganda and Hon. Gitonga Mukunji of Kenya finishing second and third.

The 800m Race saw Hon. Anatropia Theonest from Tanzania securing first place in the women's category, followed by Hon. Auma Hellen Wandera of Uganda and Hon. Mukabalisa Germaine of Rwanda. In the men's category, Hon. Acon Julius from Uganda took the top spot, with Hon. Ssekitoleko Robert and Hon. Lotee Titus, both from Uganda, finishing second and third.

In the 1500m Race, Hon. Theonest Anatropia from Tanzania won the women's category, with Hon. Auma Hellen Wandera and Hon. Akello Christine, both from Uganda, taking second and third places. The men's category was led by Hon. Acon Julius Bua from Uganda, followed by Hon. Robert Ssekitoleko of Uganda and Hon. Lotee Titus of Kenya.

The 4x100m Relay saw Uganda winning the women's category, followed by Tanzania and Kenya. In the men's category, Kenya took first place, with EALA and Uganda finishing second and third.

In the 4x400m Relay, Uganda emerged victorious in the men's category, with Kenya taking second place.

The 1600m Walking Race saw Hon. Christine Akello from Uganda winning the women's category, followed by Hon. Abeja Susan and Hon. Namugga Goretti, both from Uganda. In the men's category, Hon. Simon King’ala from Kenya took first place, with Hon. Ochan Patrick and Hon. Teira John, both from Uganda, finishing second and third.

Other Disciplines and Awards

In Athletics, Uganda dominated both the female and male categories, taking first place, with Tanzania and Kenya following in the female category, and Kenya and EALA in the male category.

In Tug of War, Uganda's female MPs took first place, followed by Tanzania and Kenya. The male MPs' category also saw Uganda in first place, with Tanzania and Kenya taking second and third.

In Basketball, Uganda's female MPs secured first place, followed by Tanzania and Kenya. The male MPs' category saw Uganda in first place, with Kenya and Burundi finishing second and third.

In Volleyball, Tanzania's female team took first place, followed by Uganda and Kenya. The male category was led by Rwanda, with Burundi and Kenya taking second and third.

In Netball, Uganda emerged victorious, followed by Tanzania and Kenya.

In Golf, Uganda's female team took first place, followed by Tanzania and Kenya. The male MPs' category saw Kenya in first place, with Uganda and Tanzania finishing second and third.In Darts (Standing), Hon. Mwantatu M. Khamis from Tanzania won the female category, followed by Hon. Sitienei Janet of Kenya and Hon. Ababiku Jesca of Uganda. 

The male category was led by Hon. Mwata Ally from Tanzania, with Hon. Mpindi Bumali of Uganda and Hon. Mbugua George of Kenya taking second and third.

In Darts (Wheelchair), Hon. Museo Rose from Kenya won the female MPs' category, followed by Hon. Kanushu Laura of Uganda. The male MPs' category saw Hon. Koskei Bishop from Kenya in first place, with Hon. Tim Wanyonyi of Kenya and Hon. Bahati Alex of EALA finishing second and third.

In Darts (Doubles), Kenya took first place, followed by Tanzania and Uganda.

In Football, Uganda emerged victorious, followed by Tanzania and Burundi.The Most Disciplined Team award went to Rwanda.

Special Awards

In Golf, the Longest Drive Man award went to Hon. Dickson Kateshumbwa, and the Longest Drive Lady award to Hon. Mary Maingi. The Nearest to the Pin Man award was won by Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, while the Best Man and Best Lady awards went to Hon. Caleb Mule and Hon. Mary Maingi, respectively.

In Basketball, the (Most Valuable Player) MVP Men award went to Hon. Mwine Mpaka (No. 4), and the MVP Women award to Hon. Esther Matiko (No. 9).In Netball, the MVP award was won by Hon. Sarah Kayagi Netalisile.In Football, the MVP award went to Hon. Amollo Paul Otiende.

In Volleyball, the MVP Women award went to Hon. Jesca Kishoa, and the MVP Men award to Hon. Muhakwa Valens.

The Most Active Player award was given to Hon. Kanini Kegan of EALA.

EALA extends its heartfelt congratulations to all participants and winners. The Assembly also expresses its gratitude to the host city of Mombasa and all those who contributed to the success of the games. The IPG continues to be a testament to the spirit of unity and cooperation within the East African Community.

The EAC-IPG was established by a resolution of the 4th EAC Bureau of Speakers held in 2009, with the aim to build relations between the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the Parliaments of the Partner States of the East African Community.
