Mixed Day for EALA at the Inter-Parliamentary Games

MIXED DAY FOR EALA AT THE INTER-PARLIAMENTARY GAMES…historic 2-1 win over Parliament of Uganda in soccer marks highligh

East African Legislative Assembly, Kigali, Rwanda, December 4, 2015:  EALA got the better of defending champions, Parliament of Uganda beating them 2-1 in a fast paced match as soccer got underway at the Kigali Regional Stadium in Nyamirambo.

The entertaining match grabbed the headlines in a day that also saw the Parliamentarians tee-off in Golf, one of the new sports disciplines at this year’s tournament.

EALA took an early lead in football after a Parliament of Uganda defender handled the ball in the box. Up stepped John Kibwana to slot the ball past Ssekide Dan in goal.Parliament of Uganda however piled up the pressure exchanging fine passes in the midfield.Hon Ssekitoleko Kafeero, Hon Odonga Otto, Hon Dennis Obua and Hon Patrick Nsanja were outstanding spraying passes at will for the better part of the afternoon.

Hon Dennis Obua picked up a ball and set up Hon Nsanja Patrick who then beat the advancing EALA goalie to equalize.

Time and again the marauding strikers made in-roads into the EALA backline but the trio of Hon Jeremie Ngendakumana, Hon Emmanuel Nengo and Hon Bernard Mulengani were rock-solid in defence.

EALA rested an injured Hon Mulengani for Hon Taslima Twaha and also brought in HonMartin Ngoga for Hon Jeremie Ngendakumana, thus speeding up the tempo.

Ibrahim Jamal combined well with Hon Mukasa Mbidde and Hon Bazivamo Christophe to latch in the winner in the 49th minute.Hon Bazivamo almost made it 3-1 but his shot was parried over the bar for a fruitless corner kick by Ssekide Daniel.

In Volleyball (Men), EALA beat Parliament of Uganda by 2 sets to 0 as the volleyball game got underway.Parliament of Kenya inflicted a similar defeat on hosts, Parliament of Rwanda at Stade Petit, Amahoro.

In the first match EALA started slowly but picked up pace half-way in to the match.EALA won the first set 25-16.In the second set, the regional legislators again whipped Parliament of Uganda 25-19.

But the women team made up for where the men failed beating EALA by a similar margin.In the first set, Uganda bagged 25 points against EALA’s 18 and repeated the feat winning 25-16 in the second set.

In the second match, a resilient Parliament of Rwanda defeated Parliament of Kenya 2- 0 taking the first set 25-13 and later 25-22.

In netball, Parliament of Uganda were however the better side walloping EALA 41-7.Parliament of Uganda took a commanding lead from the first quarter with an 11-2 lead at resumption. They never looked back.

Hon Susan Netasiire who was the toast to the team netted a total of 17 points while Hon Susan Ameero netted 8 points.

EALA’s Hon Judith Pareno scored a total of 6 points for EALA.

Parliament of Kenya also beat Parliament of Rwanda 17-10.Hon Dorcas Kedogo notched 13 points while Hon Gloriose Uwanyigira lobbed in 8 points.

The Golf tournament also commenced with a tee-off at the Kigali Golf Club, Nyarutarama.Speaker, EALA, Daniel F. Kidega took the first tee off the lawn a few minutes to 9 am in the morning.The 9 hole competition pits legislators from Kenya, Rwanda, EALA and Uganda.

This is the first time that Golf is featuring in the Tournament.The Golf competition continues on Wednesday, December 7, 2015.
