Rt Hon Kinana is current Secretary General of ruling party, CCM
East African Legislative Assembly, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: 1 November 2016,: An aura of nostalgia was the order of the day as EALA Speaker, Rt Hon Daniel F. Kidega met with the First Speaker of the Assembly, Rt Hon Abdulrahman Kinana in Dar es Salaam.
It was not just a case of a meeting of the first versus the current, but key matters revolving on strengthening the integration agenda took centre stage in the discussion. Rt. Hon Abdulrahman Kinana hailed the Speaker and Members for focusing on the integration dispensation and said the Assembly must continue to play the fundamental role of legislation, oversight and representation.
“EALA’s place in the integration process is unrivalled. It must ensure the legislative agenda is realized for the sake of the citizens of the region”, Rt Hon Kinana said.
The Speaker Emeritus challenged the Assembly to redouble its effort in so far as sensitization is concerned. He particularly called on EALA to reach out to the National Parliaments/Assemblies in the EAC with the integration message.
“I challenge you to enhance outreach to the legislators especially given the fact that some of the Partner States have recently been through polls and elected new legislators”, Rt Hon Kinana said.
In his remarks, Rt Hon Daniel Kidega hailed the former Speaker for laying a strong foundation for the Assembly, noting that it had continued to progress over the years.
The Speaker informed Rt Hon Kinana about the progress at the EALA in particular and at the EAC in general.
Rt Hon Kinana who is the Secretary General of the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), was the first Speaker of EALA. He presided over the Assembly from November 2001-November 2006.
The period of the 2nd Assembly ran from June 2006 to June 2012. This is the 3rd Assembly. Its tenure ends in June 2017.
