Arusha, Tanzania – June 22, 2024: The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) 4th Meeting of the 2nd Session of the 5th Assembly will resume its business on Monday, June 24,2024 in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. The first sitting on Monday will be a special sitting in honor and memory of the late Hon. (Dr.) Shogo Richard Mlozi, a member of EALA, who suddenly passed on last week. Members will take the opportunity to pay tribute to the late and recognize her service to the Community.
Among the key items to be transacted during the 4th meeting of the 2nd Session of the 5th Assembly includes the passing of the EAC Supplementary Budget Estimates for FY2023/2024; Presentation and implementation of EAC budget Estimates for FY2024/2025; Examining and passing of the Audited Financial statements for the Financial Year ended June 2022. The Assembly will also undertake several outreach activities including sensitization on climate change and EALA women’s Caucus outreach activity on inter-generational women dialogue.
The New Secretary General of EAC HER. Excellency Veronica Mueni Nduva will take oath on Tuesday 25th June, 2024 as Ex-Officio of the East African Legislative Assembly in accordance with Article 48 of the Treaty which states that the membership of the Assembly shall comprise “(a) nine members elected by Partner state, and the Secretary General and the counsel to the Community”.
The Minister of The Federal Republic of Somalia in charge of EAC Affairs, H.E Amb. Ahmed Moalim Fiqi Ahmed , Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will also take oath in line with Rule 5 of the Rules of Procedures of the Assembly... “No member can sit or participate in the proceedings of the House until the oath of affirmation of Allegiance to the Treaty is taken”. The Federal Republic of Somalia was admitted into the EAC bloc by the Summit of EAC Heads of State on the 24th November, 2024 and became full members on 4th March, 2024 when they presented the Instruments of ratification to the Secretary General of EAC in Arusha.
