The East African Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution in Rwanda and Uganda to Assess Processes, Regulations, and Challenges of National General Elections in PS

Arusha EAC HQ, United Republic of Tanzania- The African Legislative Assembly's Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution has embarked on an oversight activity to assess the electoral processes, regulations, and challenges of conducting national general elections in the Partner States of the East African Community (EAC). 

The Treaty establishing the EAC emphasizes the importance of good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, and social justice. As such, the Committee aims to evaluate the electoral processes in EAC Partner States and Civil Society Organizations in accordance with international accepted standards and the EAC Treaty. 

The objectives of the activity include identifying challenges, weaknesses, opportunities, and strengths for improving electoral practices within the Community, appreciating the role of elections in promoting democracy, peace, and stability, and making recommendations for strengthening electoral processes for the benefit of all Partner States. 

Scheduled to take place from today the 20th - 22nd May 2024, the oversight activity will see Committee Members divided into two groups: one group composed of Ten (10) Honorable members led by Hon. Amb. Dr. Harebamungu Mathias, visiting the Republic of Uganda and the other group of eleven (11) Honorable Members, led by The Chair of the Committee, Hon. Dr. Siranda Gerald Blacks, visiting the Republic of Rwanda. The groups will interact with electoral bodies and institutions involved in the management of elections, engaging with various stakeholders including government ministries, political parties, civil society organizations, media councils, youth groups, and academia in the respective countries. 

The expected output of the activity includes equipping Members with knowledge of electoral management processes, generating a report with recommendations for debate and adoption by the House, and proposing future actions for the management of elections in Partner States.
