The Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPGs) Tournament Programmme Evaluation Meeting for the 2023 Inter-Parliamentary Games and 1 st Joint Planning Meeting for the 2024 Games underway in Arusha.

Arusha EAC HQ, United Republic of Tanzania -The Joint Planning Committee (JPC) for the East African annual Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPG) tournament is in Arusha for the evaluation meeting of the 13th Edition of the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPG) that was held in Kigali, Republic of Rwanda on the 7th -19th December, 2023 under the theme; “For a Progressive, Peaceful, and All-inclusive EAC”.

The committee will also take this opportunity as the 1st Joint Planning Meeting for the upcoming December 2024 Inter-Parliamentary Games, expected to be held in the Republic of Kenya. In their opening remarks, the Chairpersons representing the Sport Clubs of the National Parliaments of member states gave their remarks each praised and applauded the parliament of Rwanda for successfully hosting the IPGs in 2023. They acknowledged the hospitality of the
Rwandan people and the outstanding organization of the Parliamentary games by the Parliament of Rwanda.

In attendance are Hon. Kanini Kega -A member of the EALA sitting in for the Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Francine Rutazama, who is on another official engagement outside Arusha; Hon. Senator Danson Mungatana-from the Senate, of the Parliament of Kenya; Hon. Vincent KawayaRepresenting the National Assembly of Kenya; Hon. Abbas Tarimba-Representing the National Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania; Hon. Njiji Desire -representing the Senate of the
parliament of Burundi; Hon. George Andrea Juma representing The Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly (RTNLA), South Sudan; And Mr. Yankurije Thacien a senior staffer, Representing the Parliament of Rwanda (attending virtually).

NOTE: The members representing the Parliaments of Uganda and The Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC) respectively are not in attendance but gave their assurances of attending the rest of the sessions tomorrow.

The Committee will review the report and table their recommendations to the Bureau of Speakers for deliberation and adoption, which will pave way for the posting of the 2024 Inter-Parliamentary Games (IPGs).

About the IPGs

IPG Tournament is an annual sporting event that brings together members of parliament and staff of various parliaments of the EAC (EAC). The tournament is a key aspect of building relations between the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the EAC national parliaments in line with Article 49 (2)(a) of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC. Chief objectives of this critical event include:

a. To build relations between the East African Legislative Assembly and the National Parliaments
in the EAC region;
b. To sensitize members, staff, and citizens from all the Partner States about the EAC integration
process and the progress realized thereof; and
c. To create awareness amongst participants on the expectations of the IPG and its benefits.

A total of 8 teams are expected to participate in the upcoming 14thth EAC-IPG including EALA, TNLA of South Sudan, Parliament of Kenya, Parliament of Tanzania, Parliament of Burundi, Parliament of Uganda, The Parliament of Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC).
The Federal Republic of Somalia will join the games once they elect their members to the EALA. The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) coordinates the IPG tournaments while the hosting national parliament and the Joint Planning committee organise and offer other logistical support to ensure a successful tournament.
